Electronic Medical Records Systems Expert

OpenMRS deployment, migration and operational support

Open for applicationsApply online →

Job description

Deploy and sustain electronic medical records (EMRs) in health facilities, with a strong emphasis on OpenMRS. You will establish systems where no EMR currently exists, migrate records from legacy systems and provide technical support after launch. The role combines implementation engineering, clinical-workflow configuration, troubleshooting and practical training for facility teams.

Company description

Heritage Alliance Ltd is a health research and data science company based in Belgium, working with partners in Africa and internationally.

Who we are

We work with clinicians, facility managers and engineers to introduce digital systems that fit local care processes and can be maintained by the institutions using them.

Our core domains of activity

Health Data Sciences & Advanced Analytics: Improve the quality and accessibility of clinical records and support authorised extraction for reporting and research.

Complex Clinical Research, including Clinical Trials and Implementation Science: Support reliable clinical documentation and appropriate connections between routine care systems and research workflows.

Innovation & Digital Health Systems Development: Implement and maintain OpenMRS, integrate related health applications and build local operational capacity.

Why people join Heritage Alliance Ltd

A mission-driven environment: Help healthcare teams move from fragmented records to dependable digital workflows.

Cutting-edge technologies: Work with OpenMRS, open-source infrastructure and standards-based interfaces.

International exposure: Collaborate directly with clinical and technical teams in diverse health facilities.

Growth and leadership opportunities: Lead deployments, improve support practices and develop local implementation teams.

Your opportunity

We seek a hands-on implementer who can take a facility from readiness assessment through launch and stable operation, and who remains accountable for resolving problems after installation.

Role description

You will coordinate technical implementation with facility leadership and clinical users. This role requires on-site work during assessments, deployment and major transitions; remote support will complement those activities.

  • Assess facility readiness: Map patient journeys and documentation needs; assess equipment, networking, power, connectivity, staffing and local support capacity; agree an implementation plan with facility leaders.
  • Deploy OpenMRS from the ground up: Install and configure suitable OpenMRS distributions, including OpenMRS 3 where appropriate; establish production and test environments, database services, secure connections and operational monitoring.
  • Configure clinical workflows: Set up locations, users, role-based permissions, patient identifiers, concept dictionaries, forms, encounters, orders and reporting with clinical owners; document and test configuration changes.
  • Support facilities using paper records: Plan registration and paper-to-digital workflows, prioritise authorised historical data entry and provide downtime procedures suited to local connectivity and power constraints.
  • Migrate legacy EMR data: Inventory source data; map identifiers and clinical concepts; create migration scripts; resolve duplicates; reconcile counts and sampled clinical histories; obtain clinical and data-owner acceptance.
  • Manage the transition safely: Rehearse migration and launch, maintain verified backups, define rollback criteria and coordinate the operational switchover to minimise disruption to care.
  • Integrate connected systems: Build and troubleshoot application programming interfaces (APIs) with laboratory, pharmacy, reporting or research systems; use OpenMRS REST services and Health Level Seven (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) where supported.
  • Resolve operational incidents: Investigate application, module, database and interface failures through logs and reproducible diagnostics; prioritise incidents by impact, communicate progress and document root causes.
  • Maintain reliable services: Test upgrades and security patches before release; manage module compatibility, database performance, backups and restoration drills; maintain access reviews, audit logging and recovery procedures.
  • Train and hand over: Train clinical users, super-users and local administrators; deliver configuration records, deployment scripts, user guides and support procedures, with clear escalation routes and responsibilities.

Travel and on-site work: On-site facility deployment, migration, training and troubleshooting are integral to the role.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, health informatics or a related field, or equivalent substantial implementation experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on OpenMRS experience in a live health facility, covering installation, configuration, user support and troubleshooting after launch.
  • Evidence of implementing an EMR in a facility without a previous system and of migrating data from an existing clinical system; clearly state your individual contribution to each.
  • Practical knowledge of OpenMRS data structures, concepts, forms, modules, patient identifiers and permissions; familiarity with OpenMRS 3 and relevant legacy deployments.
  • Strong Linux, SQL, MySQL or MariaDB, networking and container skills; ability to investigate logs, database errors and integration failures.
  • Ability to work with Java-based backends and JavaScript or TypeScript frontends sufficiently to diagnose faults and implement or coordinate tested fixes.
  • Experience with documented acceptance testing, data reconciliation, backup restoration, change control and secure handling of clinical records.
  • Ability to train non-technical users, work in resource-constrained facilities and travel for implementation; fluency in English and a good command of French.

Desirable

  • OpenMRS module development, community contributions, automated deployment, monitoring or continuous integration experience.
  • Experience with other EMRs such as OpenClinic GA or Bahmni, laboratory interfaces, national reporting systems, HL7 FHIR or extraction for the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP CDM).

Our offer

Remuneration: Negotiable, reflecting experience, responsibilities, duty station and contract arrangements.

Career development: Opportunities to lead facility deployments and develop expertise in OpenMRS engineering, interoperability and sustainable technical support.

Working environment: Multidisciplinary collaboration, access to relevant technical resources and opportunities to contribute to international health research. Benefits and working arrangements will be specified in the employment offer.
